When we hear about celebrities who have issues with addiction, many of us immediately think of rock stars in heavy metal bands, or the excessive drinking and drug usage that takes place at Hollywood parties filled with pop stars.
What we fail to remember is that, battling addiction can be a lonely and isolated experience. Some people hide their addictions from their friends and families for years. While some are open and forward with their addictions and their road to recovery, others are more reserved. Here are five celebrities that you may not have suspected to have battled and won addiction. They are definitely a reminder that no matter what we do or who we are, addiction can happen to anyone, for any reason.
Though not much is said as to how long Oprah Winfrey used drugs, the TV host phenomenon reported that she did crack cocaine in the 80’s. Regardless of how long the drug usage lasted, knowing that she once succumbed to using drugs, and found her way out, makes her all the more inspiring.
Known for her sweetheart roles and darling personality, one might not suspect that Drew Barrymore has fought and won the fight against addiction. Stating that she first tried drugs at the tender age of 8, Barrymore claims that she regrets having been put in such a situation. Unguarded about her fight with addiction, she states that she will tell her daughter about the dangers of drug addiction and insists that “one cannot be ashamed of the journey that it took…to get to where [they] are.”
When Zac Efron’s battle with addiction recently surfaced main stream media, many were shocked to hear the news. Hitting it big among a pre-teen audience, Efron emerged as a star from Disney’s High School Musical series. Completely quiet about his stints in and out of rehab, the actor revealed that he was addicted to cocaine. Now, at 25 years old, Efron claims that he has successfully completed his last period in rehab and is remaining faithful to his sobriety.
Jada Pinkett Smith
The actress and wife of Will Smith for 16 years revealed that she once struggled with addiction. Pinkett-Smith did not want to reveal exactly what it was that she was addicted to, but stated “I had many addictions, of several kinds.” Stating that with age and experience she has become a better problem solver and today at 42 years old, Pinkett states, “I have my wisdom, my heart and my conscience as the tools to overcome life’s inevitable obstacles.”
Tim McGraw is known as a country-western icon, a movie star and the husband of the beautiful country singer Faith Hill. What has not been known about Tim McGraw is the secret alcohol addiction he had and fought. “I wouldn’t just have a drink. If I was going to drink, I’d have some drinks. People were worried about me.” The country star explained that his drinking was negatively affecting his relationship and getting in the way of his life goals. Claiming that working out helped him through recovery, Tim McGraw is now successfully sober.
